Shri Calcutta K.S.Krishnamurti was one of the most respected and revered teachers of Carnatic Music in India. His teaching experience spanned almost 55 years and the number of musicians who have sought, received and benefited by his guidance is innumerable.

Born on 21st December 1921, Shri Krishnamurti was a Sangeetha Booshanam from the Annamalai University, in Chidambaram, Tamil Nadu. The Sangeetha Booshanam course was the most prestigious of academic qualifications that a musician could aspire for in those days. Shri Krishnamurti learnt music in Chidambaram under doyens like Tiger Varadachariyar, Tanjore Ponniah Pillai, Thiruvaiyaru Sabesa Iyer, Thiruppamburam Swaminatha Pillai and Sathur Krishna Iyengar. His co students at Chidambaram among others were current day veterans like Thanjavur Sankara Iyer, B.V.Raman and Lakshmanan. After qualifying Shri Krishnamurti also underwent Gurukulavasam under Shri Sathur Krishna Iyengar for a period of 2 years.

He had served as a teacher of music in Calcutta for a period of almost 16 years and had also served in places like the Rishi Valley School. Among his current day students are luminaries like Smt. Sudha Raghunathan, Shri P.Unnikrishnan, Shri Papanasam Ashok Ramani, Smts. Uma and Geetha, and Shri K.N.Sashikiran.

He set to music a number of compositions of Sudhananda Bharathi, Subramanya Bharathi, Jayadeva's Ashtapadi and many bhajans. He also composed varnams in ragas like Malavi, Kathanakuthoohalam, Janaranjani and Kuntalavarali and kritis in ragas like Subhapantuvarali, Dharmavathi and Nalinakanti.

He stood apart as a repository of musical knowledge and a reference point for all carnatic musicians young and old.
